Song structure is tricky.
It seems simple enough, but then you start writing your song, and it doesn’t really seem to want to go into a box.
This is especially true if you’re a beginner. Sometimes it’s hard to connect the “this is what a verse does and how it connects to a chorus” when you’re reading about it.
Creating the proper basic structure is one of the easiest ways to get your song headed in the right direction so the song can reveal where it wants to go.
Inevitably, as a songwriter, it’s your role to work your song craft and create something that is commercially viable, or, if it’s just for you: a song you’re proud to sing, people want to listen to and be impacted by it, and you’ve brought something into the world that’s made a difference for someone. All pretty cool stuff.
This is a nice instructional video from Kim Copeland giving you a great overview of song elements and how they tie together – in a song!
