Songwriting Toolkit

Wondering what to get that special songwriter in your life?

Or maybe you’re just starting out and are wondering what the minimum “have to have” items are?

Well, here’s a quick list to get you started on your songwriting path!

Depending on your device picks, you can start for around $150 and not have to buy anything else for a while.

Rhyming Dictionary
Yes you can use the web, but a great rhyming dictionary is what you’re looking for, not some computer’s thoughts on what technically rhymes.

Exceptional rhyme skill is something that can set you and your songs apart.

The best?

The Complete Rhyming Dictionary by Clement Wood

This is used by some of the best songwriters in the business. Also gives you some great tips on poetic use and rhyme patterns.

This works with your rhyming dictionary to find alternative words and word groups and find new ways to say the same thing with the correct number of syllables you need!

The Concise Roget’s International Thesaurus, Revised and Updated, 7th Edition

Not dictionary style, but has a wide variety, so once you get used to it, the better version.

Poetry Skills Quickly

Rules for the Dance: A Handbook for Writing and Reading Metrical Verse by Mary Oliver (1998)

This book is a terrific way to learn about poetic language, rhyme, how meter works from one of the U.S.’s greatest poets. These are essential songwriting concepts you’ll use to excel at song craft, but are often the last to be learned by songwriters.

Recording Device
If you’ve got a phone that allows you to share a recording, you’re set! If you’d like something more dedicated, there are several devices that are handy to use and can record at pretty high quality so can substitute as a four-track recorder in a pinch.

Yep, computers and tablets are great, but sometimes you just need it all in one place and no recharging needed to capture your idea!
