Follow Your Own Rules

Jun 12, 2021 | Exercises

This song exercise is meant to get you outside of your normal routine, and create some variety for you as you approach a song.

TO START: Give yourself some rules, then write within them.

Make up any you’d like and don’t think about the song itself. You’re not trying to build a song, you’re simply creating a construct to challenge yourself with for this song exercise.

Here’s an example:

  • The song has to take place over the course of 30 years, but you can’t mention that fact
  • You can’t use a bridge or a pre-chorus ( V | V | V )
  • Only use three chords:  Bm   F#m   E   or   A   C   E
  • The song can only take place in a 15 minute window of time (my song following this rule below)
