This song exercise is meant to get you outside of your normal routine, and create some variety for you as you approach a song.
TO START: Give yourself some rules, then write within them.
Make up any you’d like and don’t think about the song itself. You’re not trying to build a song, you’re simply creating a construct to challenge yourself with for this song exercise.
Here’s an example:
- The song has to take place over the course of 30 years, but you can’t mention that fact
- You can’t use a bridge or a pre-chorus ( V | V | V )
- Only use three chords: Bm F#m E or A C E
- The song can only take place in a 15 minute window of time (my song following this rule below)
The end result:
