Story Behind The Song: Jim Peterik “Vehicle”
Jim Peterik “Vehicle”

You may know a few of Jim Peterik’s songs, “Eye of the Tiger,” “Sister Christian,” performed by Night Ranger, “Hold On Loosely” by 38 Special, and “Heavy Metal” for the cult classic animated movie of the same name.

But my favorite from Jim Peterik is “Vehicle”. I love this song.  Granted, it might be because I play trumpet and brass bands run in my family, but it’s just fun to listen to. It’s got a great sound and the metaphor is brilliant – and it never breaks down in the song, becomes comic or seems forced.

The original opening line was, ‘I got a set of wheels pretty baby, won’t you hop inside my car?’

A friend showed Peterik a government issued anti-drug pamphlet one day (not speculating on why) illustrated with a drawing of an undesirable type cruising the streets. The caption read, “I’m the friendly stranger in the black sedan, won’t you hop inside my car?”
