Start With Something That's True

Repetition Device: Epistrophe

Repetition Device: Epistrophe

Epistrophe is the repetition of a phrase at the end of a line. This has the power of anchoring a thought or idea to the end of a statement.  It is the opposite of Anaphora.

Epistrophe is more common in poetry because ending a line with the same phrase requires a consistent use of meaning for the phrase.

Because repetition reinforces and emphasizes that meaning, changing what it means by manipulating the first half of the line is not the same as using this device.

Antanaclasis is actually the repetition of a phrase to effect a different meaning. For example, “If you can’t change the people, change the people.”

1  SONG:  Beyonce “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”

Beyonce “Single Ladies”

Odds are, if you’re using Epistrophe in a song, it will end up being your hook.  Afterall, hooks usually come at the end of the last line of your chorus. The interesting thing about Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” is it’s a true Epistrophe in that the phrase is repeated three times in the chorus, and each line makes sense with the phrase unaltered. It’s actually pretty difficult to use the same phrase at the end of three or four lines in a row and just be a straight repeat and make sense.

While this song uses Epistrophe in the chorus, it also does a nice job of using the word “up” to link the intro “. . . put your hands up” to the first verse “Up in the club, we just broke up.”

The repetition of a word at the end of a clause, then using it as the first word of the next clause is called Anadiplosis. Using it again at the end of the line is called Epanalepsis.

Yes – everything does have a name!

Single Ladies  (Lyrics)

All the single ladies (All the single ladies)
All the single ladies (All the single ladies)
All the single ladies (All the single ladies)
All the single ladies
Now put your hands up

VERSE
Up in the club, we just broke up
I’m doing my own little thing
You decided to dip but now you wanna trip
Cause another brother noticed me
I’m up on him, he up on me
don’t pay him any attention
Cause I cried my tears, for three good years
Ya can’t be mad at me

CHORUS
Cause if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you should’ve put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you should’ve put a ring on it

VERSE
I got gloss on my lips, a man on my hips
Hold me tighter than my Dereon jeans
Acting up, drink in my cup
I could care less what you think
I need no permission, did I mention
Don’t pay him any attention
Cause you had your turn
And now you gonna learn
What it really feels like to miss me

CHORUS
Cause if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it
If you liked it then you should’ve put a ring on it
Don’t be mad once you see that he want it
If you liked it then you should’ve put a ring on it

BRIDGE
Don’t treat me to these things of the world
I’m not that kind of girl
Your love is what I prefer, what I deserve
Is a man that makes me then takes me
And delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond
Pull me into your arms
Say I’m the one you want
If you don’t, you’ll be alone
And like a ghost I’ll be gone

All the single ladies (All the single ladies)
All the single ladies (All the single ladies)
All the single ladies (All the single ladies)
All the single ladies
Now put your hands up

3  POEM:  D.J. Enright “The Rebel”

In this poem, the end repetition serves to help illustrate the contrast between two situations.  Creating a link between the current and the change.

The Rebel

When everybody has short hair,
The rebel lets his hair grow long.
When everybody has long hair,
The rebel cuts his hair short.
When everybody talks during the lesson,
The rebel does’ n say a word.
When nobody talks during the lesson
The rebel does’ n say a word.
When nobody talks during the lesson ,
The rebel creates a disturbance.
When everybody wears a uniform ,
The rebel dresses in fantastic clothes.
When everybody wears fantastic clothes
The rebel dresses soberly.
In the company of dog lovers,
The rebel expresses a preference for cats.
In the company of cat lovers,
The rebel puts in a good word for dogs.
When everybody is praising the sun,
The rebel remarks on the need for rain.
When everybody is greeting the rain ,
The rebel regrets the absence of sun.
When everybody goes to the meeting
The rebel stays at home and reads a book.
When everybody stays at home and reads a book,
The rebel goes to the meeting.
When everybody says, yes please!
The rebel says, No thank you.
When everybody says: No thank you,
The rebel says, yes please!
It is very good that we have rebels
You may not find it very good to be one.
