2016 Texas Music Chart #1 Recap

2016 Texas Music Chart #1 Recap

Fifty weeks of #1 songs on the 2016 Texas Music Chart can quickly fly by, so we thought it would be pretty cool to recap the year of #1s.

Quite a few artists did some pretty amazing things this year on the chart, and while it was dominated by the guys, two women  broke through to hit number one.

There were some amazing accomplishments this year as well:  Aaron Watson, who will be opening the 2017 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was at #1 for 4 consecutive weeks.

The Josh Abbott Band was knocked out of #1 for three weeks but came back to reclaim it: the only time it happened in 2016.  And, Josh Ward who started 2016 at #1 also started 2017 at #1 with a song written by Cody Johnson.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, so let’s get started!

Hit Songs with more than one week at #1:

Artists With Multiple Titles At #1:

12 artists or bands had more than one title hit #1 on the 2016 Texas Music Chart.  But – no one more than twice.

Women On The Chart:

2015 saw one woman, Sunny Sweeney, hit #1 twice (“Bad Girl Phase” & “My Bed” with Will Hoge). In 2014 one woman, Sunny Sweeney had a #1, and before that?  2003.

Is Texas really worse than Nashville at playing women on-air?

Covers Hit #1 Three Times:

Josh Ward did it twice!

Cover of a Kevin Denney tune written with Buddy Owens and Mark Narmore (2010).

Earl Thomas Conley wrote and recorded this single back in September of 1982! It hit #1 in December of the same year.

Alejandro Escovedo cover from his 2008 album Real Animal.

Nashville Songwriters On TX Songs:

Chris Stapleton – Randy Rogers & Wade Bowen’s “‘Til It Does”

Shane McAnally – Josh Abbott Band’s “Amnesia”

Derric Ruttan – Jon Wolfe’s “Boots On a Dance Floor”

Jonathan Singleton – Jon Wolfe’s “Boots On A Dance Floor”
