The 5 SONGWRITER pillars

Why Releasing Songs
Creates Impact

A song locked in a notebook or on your private playlist alone is locked away and keeping your message from reaching the world.

And, the world may need your song right now!

Recording and sharing your music turns your private expression into a public heartbeat — one that can move, comfort, and transform listeners.

Finding the right producer, using AI and other tools to shape your ideas before you go into the studio, and finding a sound that is uniquely yours are all part of the impact process.

Not only will we explore new ways to create connection and build an audience that loves your music, but we’ll help you keep it economical.

Maximizing means more songs, and more songs mean . . . yep . . . more impact!

The The work reveals itself as you go.
It tells you what it wants to be.

Steps to Get Your Song Ready

Record With Intention

Decide if your song needs a full studio polish or an intimate demo vibe — choose what best delivers the message.

Pick Your Songs & Known Their Story

Every song started from something. Use those backstories as part of your release concept. Do the songs all tie together?

Create Release Assets

Know your brand and utilize as a guide. Artwork, lyrics, and meta data make your release professional and searchable.

How Songs Carry
Messages That Matter

Some songs entertain, others transform. By releasing your music, you give your message the chance to ripple outward — to comfort, challenge, or inspire others.

  • A lyric can change how someone sees their life.
  • A chorus can spark courage or hope.
  • A song can become a soundtrack for change.
your record – a timeline

Planning a Meaningful Release

If you’re just releasing singles, use this timeline as your schedule.

For an album using Ari Herstand’s waterfall release method, you’ll need to complete the below items before you start your waterfall process. And, this timeline does not include ordering vinyl. You’ll need to confirm that schedule independently with your vendor.

Finish mixes, define your brand identify (colours, fonts, what you stand for/don’t stand for), logo, etc. Next, create artwork and create a plan for your messaging that ties to your brand. Finally, gather all of your meta data for each song and the album into a single Google doc or sheet. You’ll need this to register everything and when you’re doing promotions, so want it all in one place – including each song’s ISRC and the album’s UPC.

Submit to distributor, create pre-save links, and sharing content to build up anticipation. For example, behind-the-scenes of making the album (writing, recording, etc.).

Celebrate the release, promote video telling the story behind the song, and invite others to share it on social platforms. Add to your YouTube Official Artist Channel so it appears on your page.

Most distributors, with the exception of CDBaby, will allow you to claim your YouTube Official Artist Channel through their interface. You’ll want to do this since it connects all of your YouTube assets into a single location. No more videos on YT Music that don’t appear on your YT music page.

Release Pitfalls to Watch Out For

  • Rushing a release without clear messaging and brand identity. Creating the right brand is critical long-term so audiences have a sense of what they are likely to hear.
  • Not having a clear plan on the song or songs you’re recording before you go into the studio. Know which songs you’re recording. Have a sense of how you want them to feel. Manage experimentation and discussion time initiated by others, especially if you’re on a budget.
  • Skipping mastering will cost you in quality and make your songs hard to listen to. Mastering not only manages the blend of different instruments and vocals, it also corrects the overall volume. This insures the song will fit into playlists seamlessly with other professionally mastered songs.
  • Thinking release ends on launch day — it’s the start of the song’s life and your promotional schedule.

Pulse FAQs for Songwriters

Not always. A simple home setup with a microphone, audio interface, and recording software can capture demos or even full releases. For live drums, high-end vocals, or a polished sound, a professional studio helps. Many songwriters use a mix — recording at home and outsourcing select parts.

A song is ready when it feels complete in both craft and message. If your lyrics, melody, and production express what you want to say clearly, and you’ve addressed basic polish through mixing and mastering, it’s time. Ask for feedback from peers. Ultimately, don’t wait for perfection — aim for authentic impact. Play it live. How did the audience respond?

Mixing balances vocals, instruments, and effects into a cohesive track. Mastering applies the final polish — adjusting loudness, EQ, and dynamics so your song sounds consistent across all platforms. Mixing shapes the emotional feel of your track, while mastering ensures it translates everywhere your song is heard.

Preparation saves time and money in the studio. Know your songs inside out — lyrics, chords, and arrangements. Bring lyric sheets, tempos, and reference tracks for the engineer. Warm up your voice or instrument, and set clear goals for the session. The more prepared you are, the more creative freedom you’ll have while recording.
